Last night I went to a production of Joe’s Garage at the Open Fist Theatre Company. It was pretty much one of the most amazing shows I’ve ever seen. Based on Frank Zappa’s 3 act rock opera, this is first time the show has ever been produced, and it was done with the full blessing and in consultation with the Zappa estate, especially his widow Gail Zappa.

Things that were amazing about the show, in no particular order:

The musicians - The set design had the 7-8 piece band (the number changed a bit from song to song) take up nearly 1/4 of the stage. Not in a pit; on stage. They were amazing. It was the perfect kind of improvisational music (even if it wasn’t improved), with a tight band that knew how to watch each other for signs and play with each other, instead of over each other. Every shitty hippie jam-band (which is a bit redundant cuz they’re all shitty, and that includes the Grateful Dead) should take their cue from these guys. The band members were in the program mixed in with the actors alphabetically, as they should be.
The main guitarist and drummer - I have to single these guys out particularly. They held the band together and were phenomenal. I said as much to the guitarist at the end of the show.
The music - There is no score for the original music, so some guy (who was in the band, playing bass) listened carefully to the original recordings and transcribed everything. It sounded perfect
The choreography - It was a small, black-box stage, with a cast of about 10-12. The choreography was tight and used the space perfectly. It never seemed cluttered or forced, and was always complemented the music.
Joe - The actor looked familiar, although I don’t know where they found this guy. He spends the entire second act wearing an apron and a thong, and you wouldn’t know it from the way he acts as if he’s doing Shakespeare. When he stands rigid for the entire last song, “Green Rosetta”, it’s a thing to watch.
The Central Scrutenizer - Both the voice and the pupptery (it was basically a huge marionette) were spot on.
Nicole Disson - I don’t know who she is, but I’m a little bit in love with her. She’s a member of the chorus (and part of the Open Fist Company), but constantly stood out as the most energetic, and not just because she is the most beautiful. Hang loose, call me, we’ll get a beer.
The killer toilet in “Why Does It Hurt When I Pee” - The costume designer had a ton of fun with this, and the Sy-Borg costume.

There’s so much more I can say. I was stunned by the whole thing. You can get a glimpse of the rehearsals here.
